Doctors almost never pay attention to the other drugs you take.
One of the things they do is check your drug interactions both with other drugs you take and other problems you have.
The doctors also tend to not offer different options, they just prescribe a medicine. Pharmacists can help decide which medicine works best for you.
A good pharmacist is a great asset. But there are quite a few shitty pharmacists as well.
Also, there are pharmacist, not Walgreens, rite aid, etc..., but there are still plenty of pharmacists who compound and mix drugs.

I don't know but Perla is in pharmacy school so they are living on Eddie's Paycheck. Supposedly regions bank helped them with a financial plan in order to take their next step.
Two years from now, perla will be addicted to pain killers and eddie will be finding new side pieces.
Perla will be hooked on dope while taking 1/2 of Eddies shite.

I know they aren't in the back with a mortar and pestle whipping up some drugs that the doctor wrote a Rx for
A friend of mine mixes chemo cocktails.
Also, Pharmacists can counsel patients on drug side effects, and contraindications.

Count pills
Read computer alerts to potential interactions with other meds

That is the doctors job though
1. It's not.
2. They suck at that job.

pharmacists don't screen you when you get the drugs as to side effects nor can they change the drugs themselves,
They can do both of those things.

I believe once they offer their opinions, their liability (and liability insurance) is now solely on the hook. When the Doctor prescribes Drug A and the Pharmacist recommends Drug B and you ingest Drug B and are sick from it, it absolves the Doctor of his liability and they are solely on the hook.

These are honest questions, though they may sound like sarcasm.
quote:But aren't you basically just following instructions?
You also still have compound medications that are prepared specifically for a patient.
quote:Couldn't there be a software program that does this?
At the very least, they have to have a working knowledge of the drugs being dispensed so that they can work as a check and balance of what's being distributed and if it could interact with other meds distributed to the same patient by other doctors.

No.
And you could say that for almost any job.
From Plumber/electrician to heart surgeon.

Forgot to add we're the ones to give you a reality check for how fortunate you may be to have good insurance when we give you the cash price for your 30 day supply with and without insurance. Had a girl complain about hers that was $40 vs $455 cash. That shut her up real quick

They can count faster than the rest of us and have to have really good vision to read the words on the pills

As the medical world stands right now? No. Plus, there's the psychological effect.
Many people would rather take advice from and talk to a pharmacist than a computer screen.

Whatever they do, just know they do it behind the counter

They push pharming agendas

A doctor provides the basic form, but I believe the pharmacist is responsible for the personalization with strength, dosing, and any substitutions if there are interactions with another medication the patient is taking.

And hopefully it never goes down, never gets "glitchy", etc. I'll take the person.

Not really. The investor who analyzes stocks and the market or the lawyer crafting an ideal, persuasive closing argument isn't "following instructions". There are certain jobs that require an amount of intellect and creativity that cannot be reproduced to a "cookbook" like method.
<---- Not a broker or attorney.
ETA: Do you know anything about what I said earlier (once the pharmacist makes a recommendation, she is solely on the hook)? Is that true?
