I think we're getting to the point of diminishing returns with new computers and laptops. All the chips that are brought to the market primarily tout efficiency (i.e. less drain on the laptop battery) rather than processing power, and any speed increases are generally incremental.

For basic every day computing tasks 5-7 year old computers run fine, especially when paired with an SSD.
