I know about this event. It is also touched on in the movie as well. According to an eye witness, after the white flag was raised, Tarleton's horse was shot out from under him. After that happened, the Loyalists thought the surrendering troops had just killed their commander so they went and killed all the Continentals.

This is not even comparable to the burning of a church full of townspeople.
