Other than being kept from leaving I don't know much about this who ordeal. Why couldn't they leave the country?

The government wouldn't let them remove their child from the hospital. There was never a good reason other than the treatment was a long shot and the government didn't want to prolong any potential suffering. Keep in mind, under socialist medicine, the government owns you and your children.

Trump, the leader of the most powerful country in the world, wanted Charlie here.
The U.S. Congress voted to grant Charlie permanent U.S. residence.
The internet raised about $1.75 million to pay for his treatment.
A doctor in the U.S. agreed to admit Charlie and treat him.
The Pope said that Charlie should be allowed to be treated in the U.S.

But the socialist healthcare system of the UK said no, so that was that. A child must die to glorify socialism.
