Oh yea I never use that to charge my phone.....it was bad with my Nexus 6p...it is basically only enough to keep it turned on not really charge it. Now my wife's car actually does charge her iphone somewhat but I've never tried my phone in there before.
Get on Amazon and find you a decent USB-C car charger and it will work great.

I used to have issues with my phone while in the car. I would lose battery with it connected to the usb while listening to music and using waze. I bought a little $10? car charger for the cigarette lighter plug and now it actually charges *almost* like it's plugged in to the wall at home. highly recommend it. this is the one I got
