So was the main character kid incapable of feeling frustration that some random German just blew up a tank, while he watched US men burn alive crawling out the tank, one shooting himself while on fire, but he couldn't let his frustration out on the German that did this and shoot him? Was that part just beyond ridiculous as well?

I get the point you're making, and they probably could have handled the ending a bit differently, but the point of the scene, in conjunction with the one I mentioned above, was to show that there were kids on both sides of the war that were scared shitless when they first started, and weren't ready to kill people.
