quote:Can you explain what makes Santa Fe so special as I am thinking about going there this winter. Either there or Sedona or maybe both via car from Phoenix or Albuquerque?
Santa Fe is the most beautiful city I have ever seen in the US.

The city itself is beautiful with all the Adobe architecture, mountains and rolling hills, cleanliness, friendliness, etc.
It's a lot like New Orleans without the smell and crime. In the plaza area, it has a French Quarter feel to it.

I started in Amarillo, headed west on I-40 (Route 66), spent the night in Tucumcari, then west and north to Madrid & Santa Fe. Headed south to White Sands but stayed in Roswell. Went to Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands again.
If I do it again, I would spend first night in Tucumcari with just a couple hour stop in Amarillo for the Cadillac Ranch. Amarillo is nice but I was looking for modern ruins and old motels, not a modern city. Tucumcari is less than 2 hours from Amarillo. It's about a 14 hour drive to Tucumcari from Baton Rouge. I would spend more time in Santa Fe/Madrid/Old Albuquerque, and completely not got to Roswell. I would stay in Cloudcroft in the south, up in the mountains between White Sands and Carlsbad.

I have added it to the OP, but here is the original, pre-1939 Route 66, about 1/4 mile south of I-40. It was moved in the 40's to where I-40 is laid over top of it now.
You can still drive this, it goes from Glenrio (TX/NM line to San Jon (about 20 miles

I've said this for some time. Santa Barbara is right up there, but Santa Fe is incredible. True hidden gem.

Heh, don't underestimate the crime there. You certainly aren't going to get robbed, but there is a HUGE theft issue. Don't leave bikes on your racks on a car there, as they will be stolen. Also be careful when hiking in the area with leaving your valuables in car at trailhead.
That being said, I love Santa Fe, and we go often. I should put together a guide to Santa Fe eating and entertainment sometime, as I end up posting the same recs in just about every thread about the place.

How do you get there? I'm in Nashville and it is always ridiculously expensive for round trips. Even S'West --> Albuquerque (Santa Fe via train) is ~$600 round trip.

We drive, but we're in Northwest Arkansas, so it's only 10 or so hours for us. Flying isn't really an option, as we're usually toting mountain bikes, fly rods, tents, backpacks, etc..
Driving from Nashville would be a haul, though. Flying into ABQ is likely your best bet, but sounds like that's expensive.

I know what you mean. Usually when we go on vacation, the local food is not memorable, but the food of New Mexico was amazing. We even stopped at Taco Bell for a quick bite, it was completely different then our Taco Bell's. It had a real, flat top grilled tortilla, not just some limp doughy thing. The seasoning was different, much better.
I'm not just using Taco Bell to compare NM food to ours, it's just any food that is Southwest or Mexican is so much better than you will get here. I was very surprised at the quality.

Truth. The food is what keeps me coming back to Santa Fe. Food is always a major part of our vacations. The beauty of Santa Fe is that you can eat amazing New Mexican cuisine without spending an arm and a leg. We go to NYC and eat, and drop easily $300 as a couple on food and drink. We go to Santa Fe with our whole family, have multiple margs and eat like kings for a c note.

Awesome photographs. I have been to many of the places on your itinerary this summer and all of my pics look like they were taken by a blind man The Blue Swallow and the Madrid bus/airbnb are probably my favorites, the colors and lighting are ridiculous.
Sorry Roswell didn't turn out to be the Gatlinburg/Myrtle Beach you were hoping Despite that setback, what a cool & unique trip to take your daughter on.
