Are you really going for the "gateway" argument?
Well, SG...pot was surely a "gateway" drug for me! I mean, if hallucinogenic drugs can alter reality, wtf should I waste my whole life doing repetitive and mundane tasks (job) in order to buy stuff toys/status/security/freedom/happiness/affluence/etc when I can just get there with a toke. Or even better...a snort!
I honestly do not believe that any "promote the public welfare" Government can essentially endorse the drug option, and remain a credible power for common good. At least without qualifiers re the potential detrimental aspects of drug use.I understand the personal freedom aspect; as there was a day when if I had been challenged in my own space...I'd have melted and came out shooting. Had some close calls..."but by the grace of God". Ignorance on my part.
We have Judges in our System for a reason. It is the 'Guidelines' - Cultural and Legal - and constraints which are placed on our Judges which should mitigate a particular individual's effect on the rest of us, by destructive drug-induced behaviors...and therein their degree of freedom allowed.
