They don't really purr they snarl and crackle like the biggest Harley ever.

Sigh For a Merlin

The Brits made 150,000 Merlins. They were used by the Spitfires, Lancasters, Hurricanes, Mosquitoes, and other aircraft.

Packard build Merlins in this country under license for the P-51 Mustang.

More Movie Spitfires

The BBC did a great job on the novel "Piece of Cake" back in the 80's. Six part mini-series. Should be available on Amazon.

Early Spitfires were armed with 8 X .303 cal machine guns. This wasn't really optimum and they added some 20MM cannon to later versions. But the HE-111's and JU-88's coming back to France after striking GB during the Battle of Britain were riddled with bullets and so were the crew members. Tpyical crew on these aircraft was 5. Often every crew member would be dead or wounded. It tended to whack the German morale.

JU-88

HE-111

These were both excellent aircraft.

I could have sworn a character said they did or something to that effect.
