Stayed on this property a couple years ago. Too big for my personal tastes. Nice property, good service.... good was decent but since it is the southernmost resort it is a longer drive into town for a really great meal.
Do not use the dive op at the resort. They use cattle boats and hire foreign DMs who just got their cards. They do not know the reef system like the locals or even tourists familiar with the marine park. I tried them one day and ended up taking control of the dice because the young English DM was lost and didn't know where to find marine life.

Aruba is pretty safe. It felt a lot safer than NOLA. Everyone was nice even in what seemed to be the rough parts. Criminals don't have a lot of places to hide on a small island like that.

I am a Divemaster that used to work on a boat in my spare time. And while I agree with you on the "cattle boat" thing, everyone in Cozumel is a cattle boat. You should stay where you can dive with their dive shop. This way they can take care of your gear, you can wash it, hang it up in the shop and they can get to know you.
Rarely does a dive operation take "new to them" divers to the best or most advanced places. They need to see how you dive so they don't get you killed. As for you "taking control of the dice," I'd have sat your arse and you would have been done. And anyone I've ever crewed for would have backed me up on this. I remember when I was a new DM. I was new but I was still the DM. Their job is to keep you safe and save your life.

The part that got me was they had 4 or 5 shots of tequila then another one with the group. Uh yeah... 6 shots isn't the problem at all

I just returned from a great trip to Dreams Playa Mujures. I was just me and my 7 year old. Never once was I worried for his or my safety. That resort in particular is behind three security walls.
You can tell that management there was aware of the stigma and would make sure to tell you the risks of leaving resort and what to lookout for

Sounds like you may be a safer DM, wouldn't have put newbie divers at risk and wouldn't have gotten us lost. You'd prolly got a nice tip from me, also.

Zero chance I'd get you lost! That's for damn sure!
I've seen some shite go down on the boat that was beyond our control. It still haunts me. One thing that I was taught at the very beginning is that no matter how many c-cards someone has, you really don't know how good of a diver someone is until you dive with them. And then you can still only guess how they will handle an emergency.

Zero evidence just the assumptions of parents whose kids got wasted and won the stupid prize many of could have won playing that getting wasted in the plane and continuing the party in the pool and heat game, can't be my kids fricked up it must have been Mexicans right? This is so blatantly stupid and racist on so many levels it's worthy of a laugh not a discussion

There is probably quite a bit of what you described. But I have a really good idea of what is happening in Mexico, as a country. And when you combine the two things you have a real recipe for disaster.
You don't hear of as many bad things happening in Jamaica at their all inclusives. And it's the same drinking culture.

I agree. I've got more than one rescue under my belt and if I never have another hat is fine with me.

I am a little surprised that Iberostar has not made a statement yet. I checked their website and saw nothing
I have stayed at the Iberostar in the DR 7 times and of course never had any issues. The only times I have been unconscious after drinking were self inflicted.
Will be there in 3 weeks then flying from there to Mexico. Secrets Maroma Beach. I guess I will have two chances to get drugged
Would be interesting to see Iberostar respond. We have stayed at Iberostar's around the world and mostly because they are consistent and we have trusted them.

I understand people having reservations about visiting Mexico but you can't use Jamaica as an example of a better/safer place. Have you ever been to either? Jamaica is somalia outside the resorts

I've been to Mexico a lot, but not recently. The reason I haven't been recently is because I don't feel safe there due to their lack of rule of law.
I have never been to Jamaica, not do I have any immediate plans to. I like to dive, and Jamaica isn't known for that. I know Jamaica is pretty rough and you can get in trouble outside the resorts.
All I am saying is that regarding Jamaica, you don't hear stories about these alcohol issues at their all-inclusives and people waking up in a hospital with them demanding cash.
But suit yourself.

Well I've been to both in the past 3 years and the one I will not return to cause I didn't feel safe with my kids wasn't Mexico.

Again, suit yourself.
But I trust the government officials in Jamaica before I would trust them in Mexico. And that isn't saying much.
And FWIW, I love diving in Cozumel. But I'm not going back until there is rule of law in Mexico.

will never happen until the military wipes out the cartels. Why they have not taken control of these border town shitholes makes me believe they are just as corrupt as the local and state police in mexico. i have not been to cozumel since 2002.
i will gladly take st. maarten or roatan. hell give me curacao.
