That seems an arbitrary distinction. Something generic like "ham" requires the "sandwich" rider for it to make any sense. Hamburgers and hotdogs are self contained concepts that don't require further descriptors. However, putting this forward as dispositive is about as persuasive as saying that roses aren't flowers because "rose flower" doesn't sound as good as "sun flower".

ETA: TIL poboys aren't sandwiches.

ETA2: If anyone tries to tell me that they say "poboy sandwich" I'm going to want their Louisiana card back

I'm pretty sure that there is scientific reasoning that qualifies these as flowers without the need to put "flower" behind it, so this isn't a really good comparison.

While I agree I would never say "poboy sandwich", if you google it, you will be surprised how many people use that term so yes, a poboy is a sandwich.
