You pretty much know the plot going in, superhero fights supervillain and almost inevitably wins.

Ummm....like nearly 95% of any man vs. man stories ever?

Not to mention comic books.

What is the continued appeal?

What's the continued appeal of the romantic comedy? The horror film? The western? Etc.?

Character faces situation/enemy/obstacle/journey. Character makes it through said situation/enemy/obstacle/journey. Or not.

Yeah. Aristotle said there are 2 stories ever told: comedy and tragedy. Even taking more modern thinking, there are between 2 and I think 60 or so archetypical storylines. You have seen and read them all. From the revenge thriller to the man versus nature drama to the boy meets girl romantic comedy, you've seen it all. You even know the basic structure of the plot. You can probably predict the end to 90% or more of all of the movies produced every year.

So why go see any movie? Why read any book? All fricking pointless. They do nothing besides tell the same story over and over again. They don't explore humanity, provide catharsis, or do anything beyond just tell a bland story that's been seen a thousand times. We should just read history books. Right? O wait... 90% of those are stories about men or entities facing adversity and overcoming it... Hmmmmm. I guess we should all just die. Yep. That's the answer.
