The population today of Finland is 5 million. The population in 1940 is 3.6 million. But it gave us two of the best fighters ever.

Many people know of the sniper The WhiteDeath:

quote:

Simo "Simuna" Häyhä (Finnish pronunciation: ['simo? 'hæy??æ]; 17 December 1905 – 1 April 2002), nicknamed "White Death" (Russian: ????? ??????, Belaya Smert; Finnish: valkoinen kuolema; Swedish: den vita döden) by the Red Army[citation needed], was a Finnish sniper. According to western sources, using a Finnish-produced M/28-30 rifle (a variant of the Mosin–Nagant rifle) and the Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun, he is reported as having killed 505 men during the 1939–40 Winter War, the highest recorded number of confirmed sniper kills in any major war.[2][3] However, Antti Rantama (Häyhä's unit military chaplain), credited 259 confirmed sniper kills were made by Simo Häyhä during the Winter War.[4]

But fewer people have heard about the greatest non-German fighter pilot of all time:

quote:

Eino Ilmari "Illu" Juutilainen (21 February 1914 – 21 February 1999) was a fighter pilot of the Ilmavoimat (Finnish Air Force), and the top scoring non-German fighter pilot of all time. This makes him the top flying ace of the Finnish Air Force, leading all Finnish pilots in score against Soviet aircraft in World War II (1939–40 and 1941–44), with 94 confirmed aerial combat victories in 437 sorties.[1] He himself claimed 126 victories. He achieved 34 of his victories while flying the Brewster Buffalo fighte

Okay, a discrepancy of 246 kills raises a lot of red flags as to how true either of those numbers are.

He deserves a medal if he got more than 5 kills in a Buffalo. Must have been vs the older Soviet aircraft.

Their history is impressive. It's a small country with about as many people as Louisiana, holding off a Russian invasion during WWII. Probably lots of other Finnish warriors that were never known.
