During the depression, Marklin made a huge metal toy submarine (four feet long) that came with a die cast full crew. I couldn't find a photo - know of one that some train collector has placed behind his layout. Incredible, cannot imagine what it would be worth.
Other rich kid depression and earlier era toys:
Marklin Providence paddle boat:
Clockwork battleship by Marklin:
1912, 3 1/2 foot Marklin toy Lusitania (and they had one that was even larger)
Marklin toy clockwork submarine, had an airtight latch to insert the key to wind it up
I think all of these used to be owned by Malcolm Forbes.

If you had $350 you could have bought this during the depression (two known examples survive, one of which was bought by a butcher in NY)
