Jack Reacher

I'm finishing my first Reacher book. I've recently read a Mitch Rapp book and my question is this:
Is MP training sufficient to allow Reacher to be so good?
Seems to be the difference between the books is the Rapp, Bourne, etc. we're trained assassin, CIA black ops types.
Anyone ever have an issue with this when reading it?

Try Brad Thor (Scott Harvath) series. I liked his books better than Lee Child. I did enjoy Killing Floor, but not night school.

Brad Thor is also on my to read list. Also read the first Jack Ryan book, which isn't actually Jack Ryan.
Don't hate Child's writing style or anything. Just hate how far fetched it seems that an MP is as skilled as other books make highly trained CIA agents.

I've read all Jack Reacher books and I don't know why. They each take about one night to read and I forget them immediately. It's just an endless ATM for Lee Childs.
The worst is the movie franchise. Tom Cruise is a midget and they must surround him with the smallest actors they can find in Hollyweird to make him look tough. Jack Reacher is supposed to be about 6"4'' 250 lbs. See how stupid these books make you. I'm posting something useless on TigerDroppings. I apologize.

This.
I'll get into a mood and read 4 or 5 in a few weeks and 6 months later when I want to read more I have no idea which ones I have already read.

The rest of this post was bad though. That first Jack Reacher movie was really good and rewatchable and I never understood the people mad about how big or small Tom Cruise is.

Tom Cruise is no Jack Reacher. Stupid. I refuse to watch those movies.

No MP training is lame as hell and I'm sad to say I was involved in some of it.

You should definitely read Without Remorse.
I wanted to like the Reacher books, I've read quite a few of them. But Child writes him to be too good. Even when Reacher gets into trouble he's never really in trouble because he always gets out. And he either thinks his way out of it, or takes this insane amount of punishment to beat his way out of it, pops a couple of asprin and then is on his way. Think Jack Slater from Last Action Hero. "This is nothing but a flesh wound."

I've read Without Remorse. Great book. Another guy with a lot of training I can understand being really good in battle. Reacher on the other hand is laughable how good he is. :Spoiler Alert: In the first book, he hunts down the guy based on guessing randomly what town he is in, what hotel he was staying in, and what name he is using. It makes no sense.

I don't get that impression. He was a good cop so he has detective skills and he's also a big dude that can handle himself.
I haven't read all of the reacher books, but the ones I have it's not like he's flying into other countries and assisinating politicians, drug lords, etc.

Just based on the one boom I've read- so a very small sample size- his detective skills are amazing. I'll go back to my first example:
He is searching for a guy who he doesn't know where he is or where he went. He guesses the right town, based on a theory that the guy moved every day and wanted to stay close to home. So he guessed the right town. He narrowed the hotels in that town down and called to figure out if he was there. This narrowing wasn't that difficult. Then he guessed the name he was using. He assumed the guy was cycling through The Beatles last names and was changing everyday. He even guessed the order.
One of those I'd chalk up to good detective work. All together I find it unbelievable.
As for the fighting/shooting nothing in the first book is very outrageous. He does a lot of good shooting and hand to hand combat, and they play him up to be an extremely good tactician. But it isn't anywhere as unbelievable as his detective skills.

On the contrary. All the books are stupid. I have read each and every one in one sitting in one night alotted for each and I am dumber for it. I am so stupid that I read all of these travesties, freely admit doing so, and without any justification whatsoever other than being a stupid victim of pop culture, albeit a semi-literate one.

For most people who are fans of a book, they get an image in their minds about how characters would look. And Reacher is very clearly supposed to be a big dude. Doesn't have to ruin the movie but casting should take into account a character's physical traits. IMO

It's been about 10 years since I read the series , but wasn't Reacher (in the past) part of an MP unit that went after rogue Special Forces?

I get that and maybe it's the wash, rinse, repeat nature of those books but I don't even have an image of Reacher at this point. I think Cruise was really good in that first one and it has a solid cast and is really fun. The next one though, that's a bad movie.

I've never even read the books so Cruise didn't bother me. But people I talked to who read them always made a big deal out of the casting. I got the impression that Reacher's physicality was emphasized in the books.
I had the same issue in Last Kingdom, since I'm a book fan and the actor playing Uhtred wasn't at all like the books described. Doesn't ruin the show but I just sit there thinking "why couldn't they have just got someone who looks like he's supposed to look?"
