I've searched through the inventories at multiple dealerships and submitted requests for online quotes for specific VINs and have yet to receive a quote from anyone. The either start trying to call immediately, even though my quote request indicated for them to respond via email or send me back an email saying if I can let them know more details about what I'm looking for they are glad to help. You would think a VIN would narrow it down enough for them.

They always call first, some almost instantly when you submit the info online. I just tell them at that point that I want all future contact to be via email for two reasons:
1) I want all of our dealings in writing
2) I'm dealing with so many dealers that' it's easier to keep track of the different deals when they are in writing.
The real reason is because I have social anxiety disorder and hate talking to people, especially on the phone.
But the two reasons I give them are valid reasons. Never had any issue with them proceeding with email thereafter. Once we've reached a deal, I'll talk to them and iron out the final details.

ETA: I do most of my initial searching online through cargurus. But don't get too specific with the advanced search features listing every single option, because it's not completely accurate. Put in the few major details then weed through the cars that come up for the specific packages you want.
