Yes, she is unapologetically black and has been successful for doing so. Not many other female artist have had her level of cross over success doing so.

She didn't have to go pop to blow up, in laymans terms. She's still in (in their eyes) the little country creole chic from the 3rd ward, that wore micro braids just like her fans.

Beyonce got rich and famous for doing mainstream music and having a pretty cookie cutter image. Or are we going to pretend like Destiny's Child was real hood?

She got rich and famous, then married one of the richest if not the richest hip hop moguls, and now suddenly starts acting as if she is very black conscious. Which I don't have an issue with, people discover new beliefs and identities at different times in their lives, but it throws a wrench in the "Beyonce has become successful while being so" narrative.

Beyonce-related threads on the OT are interesting. But this is 100% correct, Destiny's Child was simply a suburban teenage TLC/SWV knockoff in the late 90s with very little edge or street cred. And pop music fans ate that up. They also benefited from having Wyclef on one of their first big hits when he was actually making good music and one of the most popular entertainers in the world.

What Beyonce is now in her music and image is way different from where she started.

I believe white men should marry white women. I believe white women should not be subjected to the drug dealing, gang banging and unemployment that defines modern black culture. I believe that white women deserve a man who will be a father to her children and not have multiple children with multiple women and then either disappear or go to prison.

I wonder what Gravy would say if someone said this. He'd be singing "We Shall Overcome" in the streets.
