Jeeze at the number of pushovers who just pay to "avoid the conflict".
My first response would have been a reply along the lines of "I didn't RSVP and I didn't go to the lunch am I still expected to pay?" Based upon that reply I would decide to pay or not. Maybe they accidentally counted me or some other error I would pay without a problem. Maybe they didn't mean to send me the email? I sure as heck wouldn't walk in there with my tail tucked between my legs and fork over my money for no reason, even if it's just $8.
