Well, they were tourists, so...
I did stuff like that my first trip, too. I don't hold that against first time visitors.
I went like 7 times in the last 1.5 years and moving there in a week so now I'm more interested in carving out my favorite local spots (and have found some faves), but I understand someone wanting to hit the historical hot spots if they've never been and don't get there often.

Sometimes a "touristy" thing is a must do, like the 9-11 memorial in NYC.
Sometimes, "touristy" is a complete shite show, such as Hollywood blvd in Los Angeles.
But, these things are popular with tourists for a reason, and merit a visit. A vacation should consist of both local, lesser known spots, and the must-do tourist attractions.
