And interesting you bring up Luke, cause if you go on a few more chapters he says that loving your family can interfere with loving God, so a true devotee will hate their family.
I'll concede that the message gets much clearer when Jesus shows up, but people defending the old testament like it had some moral teachings are either not honest or haven't read it.

He was talking about hating the worldly things, I believe. Not literally hating your family. Love your family, just don't make them an idol over the Trinity.
