this seems to destroy the coordination narrative

if they're actively looking for these emails on "hacker forums", then they didn't have a direct connection to the alleged Russian hackers

Exactly. Also, this guy was 81 yrs old... Think about that. So they had an 81 yr old guy out there looking for the emails? This makes about as much sense as sending my grandma to find me some job offers in Denver off her Facebook.

There are many threads in this story and the Podesta hack and the search for missing Clinton emails are separate but issues. In any case It will be hard to prove cooperation between the Kremlin and Trump campaign because the Russians use cut-outs, semi-independent operators that give a layer of deniability. It's not always FSB/GRU that run these operations in Europe. Smith's LLC could easily have served the a similar function of non-accountability for the Trump campaign, though we obviously don't know that.

assuming this article is true in the worst interpretation of the facts, at most there may be an FEC violation during the campaign by Flynn, KAC, and Bannon. this is just not close to the "muh Russians" narrative the left and their coordinated media cohorts have promoted

there are multiple levels to the conspiracy theory

the worst is Trump (via agents) and Putin (via agents) coordinated to hack Podesta, the DNC, etc. this is how the "treason" narrative began and the implications of what the coordinated media/DEMs have been pushing

now, assuming this article is true, it seems that there is a definite separation of the (1) hacking and (2) possible acquisition by Americans (Trump's people or otherwise). that destroys the nexus in the coordination in the hack itself

also, this article implies that Russia, acting completely separate from Trump's campaign, hacked the information and Trump's campaign had to actively seek it out. that means that the nexus in the coordination of the acquisition is more tenuous

if the argument is "well it's an FEC violation if Russia gave this to Trump's campaign" is all that's left, then that's not much (and it likely won't even hold up because i'd imagine a non-state actor delivered the information to Trump's associates, killing that illegality)

Yeah, so far. But that may be like a guy falling from a 100-story building saying he's alright when he reaches floor 50.

After that journal article the press and Mueller each have more threads to pull at and more evidence to bring to bear against Flynn to tell his full story.

And remember, this is just the public info. The story refers to American intelligence confirming the story of Russians discussing getting emails to Flynn. We don't know what they said. The FBI does. Also, don't be surprised if Smith wasn't the only oppo guy on this. Roger Stone was in contact with hackers and there are probably others.

but the entire article posits (1) Russia hacked the information separate of any American interest and (2) Trump's agents secured the information from non-state actors after the fact

dirty politics? sure

FEC violation? maybe

the narrative the left is promoting? not even close

if Trump (or his agents) had NOTHING to do with the actual hacking, then this whole "Russians" angle loses its teeth. this article claims just that

Which narrative do you mean? There's a bunch of batshit speculation with poor sourcing from Louise Mensch and company, but it's never been plausible that there would be pre-meditated coordination between Kremlin and Putin.

What there will probably be is more shoes to drop about other oppo guys-to-cut-outs communications (and if they're not all 81 years old and drop dead, some may finger higher-ups the way McCord and Dean did during Watergate) and money laundering/other financial shenanigans.

It's not going to end with evidence of Trump being on the phone with Vlad Putin. It will end with one of Trump's surrogates cooperating with a Putin surrogate in some form or fashion.

This has been an ongoing problem. People are more concerned about which people wanted the emails rather than what the emails actually said.
