Hey Project.....2018 Draft Eligible Sophomores

Can you explain to us the rule regarding draft eligible Sophomores? A quick look at the bios of some of our returning players indicates that Watson, Hess, Slaughter & Walker will all be 21 years old at or near the time of next year's draft. Thanks

I think you kind of answered your own question.

Well thats the rule. If you turn 21 before a certain date, you are eligible for the draft.
Baseball goes:
- Eligible for draft out of high school
- if you elect to go to juco, you are eligible after a year
- if you elect to go to a 4 year university you are eligible after 3 seasons, unless you turn 21 before a certain date (dont know the exact date, but I'm sure its not hard to find)

Basketball should adopt the baseball rules for college athletes...it would improve the college game tremendously.
Well should I say the NBA should adopt those rules.

I hate the age rule. It pretty much guarantees players are gone after JR year, if they've been drafted for their 2nd time.

Players come to LSU to prepare themselves for professional baseball. Can't blame anybody for leaving to pursue a dream.

ETA: I agree with you that something should be done I hate what college basketball is now. But the international leagues are a huge hinderance.

Well thats an option they have. Nothing is stopping them from doing that now, and most go to college.

I agree with that entirely. I just think more kids would get a degree, if they didn't get money (possibly millions twice already) in their face twice by the time they're 21.
Eta. Actually, as a junior it could be their 3rd time. However some won't be getting millions on their 3rd time around.

So, if a kid turns 21 within 45 days of the draft, they would be draft eligible as a sophomore.
We won't know the exact date until maybe January (when MLB schedules it), but I can give an estimation based on this years draft:
6/11/2018 seems like the most likely draft date based on previous years so a player would need to turn 21 by 7/28/2018. That means the cutoff birthday is 7/28/1997 (feel old mother frickers).
Any soph with a birthday before that will be draft eligible.
Here is that list:
Nick Bush (Redshirt)
Zachary Hess
Zach Watson
Jake Slaughter

Maybe if there were FULL Scholarships for baseball, kids would get degrees.

And that's just barely even an early birthday for a sophomore. If he's a holdback, he was born in 96'.
That rule is ridiculous.
Eta. So what freshman CANNOT get drafted next year?

Oh how I wish they would improve the baseball scholarships. Its really a joke. I guess nothing will ever be done since nobody gives a damn about baseball.
Does anybody know how many scholarships men's basketball has to give? I think baseball is something like 11.7 (not sure exactly, but thats what I remember).

All but the 4 previously mentioned.

Far more freshman dont fall into the age limit as a sophomore. They also have more incentive to come back for their sophomore season, as compared to having pretty much no reason to come back for their senior year (Pap)

Well we have a difference of opinion on it. I say that because I'm more into the college game and would like to see it better. I dont like one and dones in college, and I think its taking its toll on college basketball.

Did not Know Watson was on that list. That sucks

Less likely to leave as a sophomore though. They can set a price that is super super high and force teams to either meet it or they come back to school and do it all over again next season.
I could be wrong but Hess is the only one who may get what he wants, and thats only if he comes and shows his dominating stuff in a starters role.
