Well, it's not simply popular opinion: it's the 3rd biggest-selling album in the history of the planet, it was on the Billboard albums charts for 741 weeks spanning from 1973-1988, and accomplished so much in expanding Pink Floyd's appeal to a greater audience. Let's describe it this way: Pink Floyd probably doesn't get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame without Dark Side, that's how influential it is. Remaining opinions are clearly subjective.
