Is it really as bad as I've heard or is it just because it stands next to two giants from the first two movies?

I'm not going to lie - it's pretty bad. I watched it with no preconceived notions and - in fact - as much of a film guy as I am, I had forgotten the film existed and did not recall any specific positive or negative praise.

Now - is it the worst movie or sequel ever made? No. Pacino has some spots where he's believable as Michael. If you enjoy his work, it's worth the watch for that. If you temper your expectations, you will get a Godfather experience that isn't a disaster.

Part of it is the story. A good bit of it is the directing. Part of it is Sofia's acting (and the character is just bad, probably not all her fault). But, most of it is that it stands in the shadows of 2 fantastic films of the franchise.

I mean, it holds a 67% Rotten Tomatoes and grabbed Oscar and GG nominations for best picture - how bad can it be, objectively?

It's a good to great movie. It's just not one of the greatest films ever made (Which I and II arguably are).
