As unreliable as they can be he's consistently been near the top of the list for defensive impact stats (drpm, on/off, bpm, etc.) among guards.

And it's not like he's just gambling to pick up a bunch of steals. He has incredibly quick hands and anticipation and his stout build and quick feet allow him to even match up against bigger guys sometimes.

His positioning and anticipation set him apart. Much like on the offensive end, he's just so smart and tends to know most everything that is going on around him, he's just a step ahead of most others on the court in terms of what's going on.
