Home defense should start with .40 and higher when it comes to handguns so this type of thing doesn't happen.

And that's why I have a .44 Special with Hornady Critical Defense hollow points.

9 mm and up. 9 mm can give you more rounds so you don't have to reload and less recoil to get off fast shots.
And from a ballistic standpoint there is not much difference anymore between 9 mm and .40 cal.
I love my Sig .45 but I have grown to really like a Glock 9 mm as well. It is pretty good tool in a fight.
