Dark Knight Rises is far from an "awful" movie.
It's a truly abysmal filmatic abortion.
Batman Begins was great. It's a good movie even when compared to real movies (non-comic book). It transcends the genre.
The Dark Knight was okay until the final 1/3. Then it just became a mess.
Dark Knight Rises was so bad that the originals should be burnt and Nolan should retroactively remove his name from it.

Most of Nolan's movies are a bit of a mess. They have great concepts, but usually have giant plot holes, character issues, timing issues, overreliance on melodrama and what not. They are all very well shot though, and they all have really good plot concepts.
TDKR was alright, certainly worse than TDK but it wasn't terrible.
The nolan movie that I liked the least was interstellar
