I would say Portland and/or Newport RI
A lot of things you could do on way/back to Portland as well.
Day trip to MV is too hard because you have to get to Cape Cod and ferry to MV which takes some time.

Also, looking for any hole in the wall seafood joints in Boston that won't break the bank to give us a taste of some chowder and/or lobster.
