2 reasons
1. Greed: poor people want to steal from the rich
2. Tribal homogenization instinct: humans have a genetic need to force full assimilation into the 'clan' to insure harmony and survival.
All revolutions, wars, upheavals, or whatever can be traced to one of these two motives. Destroy what is not like you and take from others who have more. Both basic survival instincts.
Live and let live is just not human nature.

It's not just poors. There are leeches at every income level, from Sharon Jasper to Sandra Fluke to Angelo Mozilo.
