doesn't it just seem dumb, from a common sense standpoint? There is combustion going on inside the engine, and you're supplying the fuel. Not saying anything will happen, but why chance it?

I'm no mechanic, but I would assume that any combustion going on in the engine has no way to reach back to the fuel tank. If it did, I wouldn't think having the gas cap on or off would necessarily matter.
