I've got a Sony native 4k projector paired with a 135 inch Stewart screen in a room that I've got complete control over lighting.
Not sure where you are getting the idea that's it's a dying fad from. I think they're much more popular now then they were 15 years ago.
The projector's picture quality is amazing and watching a movie in my media room is 10 times more enjoyable than watching one on my 65 inch OLED in the living room.
