The OP reminds me of a quote Orioles manager Buck Showalter made about why baseball isn't as popular with the youth as other sports are. Showalter said something to the effect of "Little League and High School baseball coaches have their players just standing in the outfield shagging flyballs for two hours. Why would kids want to do that instead of playing sports like football and basketball and lacrosse and soccer where they can run around and have fun? The coaches should let the kids play shortstop and catch and play all of the positions in the field so they can enjoy playing the game instead of being bored standing still out in the outfield for two hours."
