I am sure A&M loses money on track, too.
But having the university and its students associated with championships is good for the institution in ways that per sport bean counting will never recognize.
Just one example is that there is actually a competition among top schools for best students and faculty. An overall record of high achievement can be a factor in this type of competition. Status sells.
