I think we are on the same page. I can definitely agree that this breed is instinctively prone to aggression, but I think many owners can be successful raising them to be friendly family pets.

Caution should be used when leaving any child around just about any animal at that young of an age and I think more extreme caution should be used with more aggressive breeds.

Ultimately, I feel the parents are responsible and while it is a tragic story, it could have been avoided.

I understand what you're saying but the first act of irresponsibility is having a pitbull in the house with the infant to start with. If you have to guard your napping infant 24 hours/day from the family pet then you've really fricked up with your choice of family pet.

It's not just that - it's that they have the capability to massively leverage that aggression.
