Gave a short time for it to be paid and when Lee's wife tried to have it paid they turned the money down. Then it went to auction and only bidder was the government who severely underbid. I don't know when it was decided to turn the whole place into a national cemetery, but I think Union soldiers were interred there towards the end of the war. I believe a Union general's son was killed and was buried in Mrs. Lee's rose garden as a "screw you" to Lee and the South. More burials followed.
