I may have missed it, but I don't see where they say he was hunting Elephants just that they were hunting and came upon some elephants that charged them. They shot at the elephants when they attacked them.

Avid hunter, and no desire to hunt them either. But as far as eating goes i think locap tribes eat for months off them
