Astoria by Peter Stark (Washington Irving has a version as well, but Stark's is better for a modern audience)
It's a great read for anyone even mildly tired of the laziness and entitelment prevalent in our modern culture. What some of these men/woman went through to forge a better life and establish the first American trading post on the pacific coast is truly inspiring. As was the scale of John Jacob Astor's aspirations.
