What was the point of spending all of that time on Matthew Lillard's character only to never bring it up again?

The story will circle around to Lillard's character again eventually. I also think we will only get a normal Agent Cooper towards the very end of the season - maybe even only the last episode.

Saw this posting elsewhere. Very on point. I am still enjoying it though.
