Why have him killed if he was leaking information? Why not just have him arrested? He would be the perfect scapegoat. But they killed him to "teach him a lesson" I've been told on here.
While we are dabbling in wild conspiracy theories, consider this. Lets assume that he was leaking information, but to Russian agents. They would have strong motivation for killing him in an effort to cover their tracks.

Literally couldn't be more wrong.
Theory is he was killed so they could use the Russian narrative, letting it get out that it was an internal leak would hurt that narrative
