Friend of James Comey says former FBI director was ‘disgusted’ when President Trump forced a hug on him in White House
By Dan Gunderman
Friday, May 19, 2017
Former FBI Director James Comey was "disgusted" by a hug the President Trump tried to coax out of him, a friend of the ousted official told PBS "NewsHour."
Benjamin Wittes, a Brookings Institution fellow, said that in the infamous meeting earlier this year in which Trump attempted to hug Comey — calling the FBI official “more famous than me” — the latter believed he’d been purposely compromised in public.
Comey had already become a controversial election-time figure when he renewed the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email scandal shortly before Trump’s electoral college victory in November.
Comey’s attempt in the White House meeting to remain positioned as far away from the President as possible was poised to keep the agent neutral and reduce any sensitivity many voters and/or Democrats felt about Trump’s victory, Wittes said.
The meeting was set to honor law enforcement officials who worked Trump’s inauguration, but Wittes said that Comey “really did not want to go.”
His attempt to distance himself from the President failed when Trump called him over — across the room. The former FBI director had been trying to “blend in” near the curtains, which matched the similar blue color of his blazer.
Wittes, however, said at 6-foot-8-inches, it’s difficult to remain hidden for long. Nevertheless, Wittes said Comey had tried to act like a “chameleon” and use “camouflage.”
Then, after being summoned, Comey preemptively reached for a handshake. Trump, however, appeared to pull Comey toward him for a completely one-sided hug.

Comey tried to "camouflage" himself by standing near blue curtains?
Really?
Is this some three year old pretend-playing SuperHero Chameleon, or he the Director of the FBI?
But let's look at a photo taken as President Trump greeted several officials at the Inaugural Law Enforcement and First Responders Reception:
There Comey is (tall guy, center-frame, in front of the window) "trying to 'blend in' near the curtains, which matched the similar blue color of his blazer."
So in his near-perfect camouflage, Comey is hiding front-and-center. He is standing right next to Secretary of Homeland Security General John Kelly. General Kelly is being called forward for a personal thank-you by the President.
Interestingly, everyone else in the room seems to be wearing the Comey camouflage too. It amazing we can see any of them.

More from Comey's friend, Ben Wittes
quote:So much for the "neutrality" Comey claimed to engender.
Comey understood Trump’s people as having neither knowledge of nor respect for the independence of the law enforcement function. And he saw it as an ongoing task on his part to protect the rest of the Bureau from improper contacts and interferences from a group of people he did not regard as honorable. This was a general preoccupation of Comey’s in the months he and Trump overlapped—and the difference between this relationship and his regard for Obama (which was deep) was profound and palpable.

Ugh I'm so tired of the weirdness. Can't it all just go away. Back to normal or something like it.
And Jesus, NC. You keep stranger hours than I do. Do you wake up to trade overseas or something?

A 6'8 Boy Scout that never played a sport. These stories just make him seem like such a pussy.

He needs to tell his buddies to keep this strange crap out of the news and just cooperate with the investigation where required.

Almost seems like he has a publicist or crisis manager orchestrating this. A shitty one.

This thread is in part related to the Comey question I was asking you yesterday.
Comey seems to have had a weird perception of himself and others. He felt he could carry on revealing conversations with journalists, but shun similar contact with the President. He had little apparent interest in shutting down classified leaks, and may have even been a source himself.
He aggressively pushed for conclusion to the HRC investigation, but refused even so much as publicly validating that Trump was not personally under FBI investigation. He willingly usurped the AG's role in July sullying the FBI in the process, yet claimed to stand for a "wall" between the Executive Branch and FBI.
While, he emphasized strict independence of the Bureau, he himself had multiple direct and personal conversations with FBI officials when he was at the WH and his friend Mueller was FBI Director.
I hope Mueller can set his long-standing relationship with Comey aside, and clarify for Americans what the FBI Director's role should actually be. Specifically I hope he points out the multitude of problems that Comey's July behavior created for the FBI.
Thoughts?

Just what all has Comey spoken about with Wittes? I believe here is clear evidence of an illegal leak.
WHY does this man have the knowledge he has about likely confidential level conversations between the President and Comey? Which he has proceeded to leak to the media?
The NYT article from yesterday also stated that two other individuals BRIEFED on the conversation went to the media. Comey obviously knows who these people are, it seems like the FBI should have a nice long chat with Comey and these people. And then perp walk the whole bunch.

Oh, a FRIEND of Comey's said. The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS reports hearsay. There's a shock.

If he were FBI Director today and I were Trump, after reading this pablum he and I WOULD have a little chat. And I would likely fire his weird arse then and there.
So he had to take charge of the Clinton Investigation because he feared the AG was compromised. And the White House prevented him from going public earlier. And yet he allegedly LOVES him some Barack and can't stand or trust Trump?

Well spoken, NC.
Comey is a fine example of the "lukewarm" version of PC politicos, where sensitivity to offense becomes a pernicious and societally harmful impediment to doing their job.
Comey's job is to INVESTIGATE...and report...ALL FACTS. With no regard to elections, culture, feelings, etc. He became partisan when he erred on the side of caution, believing that his IMPACT in reporting facts, would harm one side (Dems/Hillary)...and that reporting that there was no evidence of collusion re Trump/Russians would help Trump.
Comey is a wreck. I would not be surprised if he pulls a Chelsea Manning and goes female. Thank God Joe Liebermann is taking the reigns.
