I do think, this is just me, but I think that was just a random thing. It was Walter on the ship at that time anyway. David was still on that planet.
Although you have a point with them intercepting the signal from that planet.

Could be wrong, but I believe I remember Walter saying Tennessee picked up the transmission only because he was so far away from the body of the ship which had certain communications blocked.
