Option 1 easily, especially if you aren't big drinkers. One of the bigger draws for Asheville (for me) is the breweries.

Agreed. Asheville has a cool downtown and good hiking options available, but what really made it stand out for me was the concentration of top notch breweries in one walkable area (and I'm not even including New Belgium/Sierra Nevada/others nearby).
