Mooney Acclaim. Cruise at 200kts with a low fuel burn. I've seen some '07-'09s for under $300k.

A used Cirrus SR22t. It looks awesome, reasonably fast, and has a gawd damn parachute

Nice used piper Cherokee 6, or a decent mooney. Hell with that budget could get a decent used twin engine and fly the Caribbean.
Someone said beaver, good choice there. An albatross would be nice too.
Nevermind, a 1951 albatross is still $350,000
controller, albatross for sale, listing

At my age and experience level I would find a Cessna 182 Skylane with a solid airframe, but high time engine, then hang on a new engine and prop, new paint, full Garmin "glass" avionics. It is a comfortable plane, easy for a old guy to climb in and out of, no forgetting to drop the landing gear, has a good range, adequate cruise speed, but low stall speed, and will haul a pretty good load. I liken it to the F-150 pickup of the sky.
