Those were my words, not Smoltz. I may be reading more into what he said, but I took it to mean also understanding the use of his players according to their abilities rather than only their lifetime statistics.

Yeah others have said what he said this offseason and this year so far too. I think the Astros got guys like Reddick/Beltran/McCann because
A) Crane and the front office knew this team could contend right now so were willing to be more aggressive and spend on veterans
B) Free agents around the league knew this young core could contend right now so they were interested. McCann waived his no trade clause to come here and has said it's because he knew how talented this team is
The surprise 2015 year led them to stick with largely the same group last year I think. These are all just my opinions of course and I could be wrong
