One thing to consider would be the transition to digital currency and the declining use of hard cash. If the transaction was digital to begin with it makes it much easier for a computer to keep track of where the money is and where it is going.
Also look at the rise of automated tax systems like TurboTax over using a CPA.

I cannot see auditors being replaced by computers anytime soon. As far as CPAs yes Turbo Tax is great for minor cases, but there are way too many business owners out there who just hand receipts in with zero prep work.
