The lack of a true hands-on preview/review has been a little disconcerting.

agreed, but the people who have played it have said it's every bit as fun as nba jam. it's an arcade basketball game.
I have noticed that the sound is kind of lacking. no crowd noise kind of makes it less intense and it's an arcade game.

Just don't trust it until I see consensus. Especially for a game that basically didn't exist a few months ago.
I'm all in if reactions are good. But I assume collecting players is going to be the next crack. How long will it take me to get Kemp!?!
And I'm interested in how stats are working and how you grow players over time. Cool concept, but in an arcady game like this.....it can't be simulation like.
Would be a great online game. And seemingly no microtransactions.....which seems too good to be true.

I like the special abilities angle that's random that replaces "on fire"
it seems like the xp has the Disney infinity angle to it. I don't think it's going to stray too far into simulation. it's nba jam with a bare bones xp and uses the right analog for crossover.
no kemp from what i saw, but they have shaq, ewing, Iverson and that guy from the lakers who has AIDS.

Which would be ok by me.

Kemp is there bruh. But no Glove. Used to dominate Jam with that pair.

ETA Downloading now...
Me too. But if this is a price error, I imagine Sony can easily unauthorize a user's access to the game.
EDIT: oh, a demo

The demo is multiplayer only. I sat in the lobby for about 10 minutes without ever getting into a game.

Depending on Reviews I may give this a go.
I wish we could see a revival of the NBA street series too

Not sure if it's just me but the controls seem very loose. In the games I played there were a ton of missed dunks and layups. That seemed like the least NBA Jam thing about the game. Most of my games were competitive but the winning team usually only score 25-30 points. Rebounding is also difficult. Many times me or my opponent would get 5 or 6 offensive rebounds in a row. The player leveling and card packs seem intriguing but the presentation of the XP gains and losses looked second rate. The demo actually turned me off from wanting to purchase the game. There should've been a basic tutorial included to get you familiar with mechanics rather than having to wait 5 minutes between matches to learn the mechanics during a live game.
