California Tiger, glad you have the staffing and nurse:patient ratio laws. Makes good sense. Your patients must do much better under those conditions. I worked as a Peds nurse at OLOL in BR and was assigned a 9 patient load, 4 of which had received Chemo on the day shift and required the kidney rescue drug on my shift (can't remember name but think it was Mensa). There is a very short window within which this drug must be given and completed to be effective. It was the first time I ripped the Charge Nurse a new one in front of these patient's doctor. Brought the charge nurse to tears. Nurses must be patient advocates first and foremost! I'm glad to be out of that arena.

Anesthesiologists make loads of money because of the number of patients they can service through CRNA's. Kind of like a pyramid thing. If they had to personally attend to each patient, it wouldn't be near as much.

I worked a pre pre-op area before. People would always say "I want an MD and not a nurse anesthetist." We were instructed to politely nod. Let them go to day of surgery. There it would be explained that the world doesn't work that way anymore. EVERYBODY will have a CRNA on their case managing them. Don't like it? Interest you in a strap to chew on through your conscious procedure.

Let me clear things up on what you will make starting out in nola. New grad at ochsner jeff hwy is 24.50 hr with most units having a 10000 sign on bonus due to a nursing shortage here. If you work nights, you can add 5$ hr to that 24.50. Its a good living as long as you can deal with the occasional demanding bs from a patient or fam member, but lets be honest, thats any job when dealing with the public.
And yes def get your bsn. Lpn's arent even hired here, but associates are. If you ever wanna move up the ladder, you gotta have that bsn.
I like the working 3 days a week and surrounded by nice talent.

I'm also a proud member of CNA. After coming to the Bay as a travel nurse, I realized I could never work again in Louisiana as a RN.
Per Diem in northern Cal is the way to go. Union, ratios, raises, lots of OT. 100/hr base plus CA OT comes out to $800/8hr shift, $1400/12hr shift and $2200/16hr shift. Work a week, take 2-3weeks off.

My wife has done travel assignments at a Kaiser hospital in LA county and works at a hospital in Torrance, CA. The workload, mandatory breaks and patient ratio is a total change from when she worked in Oklahoma and Texas.

Is becoming an RN worth it?
If so, just go ahead and become a full-fledged doctor. That's what mine did last time I was in his office.

I know a few nurses and I wouldn't consider their salary "a lot of money". Sure, its more than working at McDs, so in your eyes, I'm sure it's enticing. Plan to work crappy shifts when you finish school.
Oh and when you hear about the Dr's fricking the nurses, it means the FEMALE nurses. You may want to just keep fryin' those fries!

Did you have to work any travel contracts with an agency before you worked Per Diem ?

I'm thinking about going to nursing school this fall. They make a lot of money after graduating, easily get hired and can basically get hired in any location I want. How much work will I have to do for two years, until I get my associates degree?
$70k a year to clean pooh pooh up and off of people is not worth it. You can go drive a shite pumper truck for $75k a year today. No degree needed.

Go ahead and become an NP. You can just about double your salary from RN to NP in our area.
