What's with the Mahomes hype?

Is it only the arm strength? There have been similar TTU QB's such as Kingsbury, BJ Symons, and Graham Harrell who all had better careers then Mahomes. Why weren't any of the above listed regarded like Mahomes is?

Athletic ability demonstrated at the combine. Those guys weren't on the same level. It also helps that this isn't as deep a QB draft as most. He's getting 2nd/3rd round grades from a number of teams, but the QB class is such that it makes him the third option in this class, so he's going to be overdrafted.
Kingsbury was slightly better in the 40, even in vertical, more than a foot shorter in long jump, slower in the cone and 20 shuttle. And he had a significantly weaker arm. Kingsbury fell all the way to the 6th round of the draft, in a little bit of a surprise.
Symons couldn't work at the combine, and was coming off a knee injury.
Harrell? There isn't a single combine measurement he wasn't well behind Mahomes in-- usually significantly so.
Overall, scouts also really like his ball placement-- which is pretty big, for an NFL guy-- and the ability to throw all over the field regardless of arm slot and body position that is a byproduct of that arm.
Every QB this year is a developmental pick-- and at least Mahomes has some tools to work with.

He has the raw talent to be an NFL QB. He's big, good frame, athletic, and has a solid arm. His college system makes it very hard to predict how he will adapt to the NFL game.
I'd imagine if he impressed the right people in some interviews that they might find the gamble worth it, especially if they have time to bring him along slowly. He's a big gamble but could be a high ceiling guy.
Most QB's are a huge gamble in the draft anyway. There are very few guys like a Luck, Manning, or Darnold that seem to be close to sure things. Whether the QB class is considered strong or weak doesn't really make much difference. Most of the high QB's drafted in any year will bust.
He's a very interesting project and the textbook boom or bust guy.

Darnold has still only started 10 games. He's got a bit to go before being considered a sure thing, even though he's on his way.
