I think many cities put a lot of tax money towards improving perception or aesthetics. Especially successful cities.
Just the press release will probably result in more revenue than it costs to tear it down.

Not true! It will make some progressives feel good and burnish Mitch's image with national-level Democratic Party bigwigs. And did I mention that it gives Mitch another chance to talk about Mitch!?
