Most people don't realize that the retirement age was set pretty lose to the "average lifespan" at its inception

Hell no - raising the retirement age is plenty fair though...
But both are probably needed and will happen at some point
I mean working within the same SS framework, you have a few options, and probably need some combination to maximize the solvency period without resorting to outside investments:
- You raise the retirement age(good luck convincing the most reliable demographic of that any time soon)
- You eliminate the cap on income subject to SS taxation(good luck getting rich donors or the party of the Norquist promise behind that one),
- You cut benefits(see the problem to raising the retirement age).
Its one of those issues that when the crisis comes, congress will finally find the will to deal with it....Or they won't, and America deals with the fallout.
........WILDCARD OPTION: You start drafting old people into the Hunger Games at 65.
